In the first semi-final of the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Pakistan secured a berth in the final by defeating tournament favourites South Africa by 7 runs. After winning the toss and opting to bat, Pakistan scored 149/4, led by a brilliant all-round performance by Shahid Afridi, who scored 51 off 34 balls and took 2 for 16 runs. Despite a fighting 64 from Jacques Kallis and an unbeaten 44 from JP Duminy, South Africa’s reply had no momentum. Afridi, with the help of Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Amir, produced pressure in the middle overs, and Umar Gul’s tight death overs restricted the Proteas to 142/5.
